Muslims, Jews and Christians Playing in Harmony:

The Salaam-Shalom Music Project

Performs at SPACE Evanston

Sunday October 21, 2018, 1:00-2:30 PM: One Show Only

Chicago, IL, October 2018 -- The Salaam-Shalom Music Project will perform this Sunday October 21, 2018, 1:00-2:30 PM at SPACE, 1245 Chicago Avenue, Evanston, IL 60202.  This collaboration between Chicago's professional Muslim, Jewish and Christian music communities focuses on traditional music and instruments from the Middle East, South Asia and Eastern Europe.  The group presents an organic and lively blending of folk traditions in Arabic, Urdu, Hebrew, Yiddish, Bosnian, Ladino and English.

"Salaam" and "Shalom" are the Arabic and Hebrew words for “peace.” This ensemble delivers a message of good will among Muslims, Jews and Christians through shared love of music. They comprise distinguished first- and second-generation artists from the US, Egypt, Pakistan, Jordan-Palestine, and the former Soviet Union, including members of the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band.  The Oud (Arabic lute), Daf (hand-held drum), the Ney (Arabic flute) harmonize with the violin, clarinet, accordion, and double bass to create an entrancing atmosphere of spirit and spirituality.

“For me, this group is the meaning of unity: a mix of people that wouldn't have otherwise met or known each other, but are brought together to make beautiful music that represents each of our heritages. Together, we celebrate the things that bring us together and forget about the things that separate us. We are bandmates, but even more so, we are friends that have fun while making music to share with our audience.”

- Dahlia Sultan, Vocalist

“This professional ensemble of Arabic and Jewish musicians exemplifies and promotes peaceful collaboration. Perhaps more important than what the Salaam-Shalom Music Project does is the quality and spirit with which they do it.”

-Dr. David Beach, University of Wisconsin-Parkside

"If there is something that can be changed in this world, it can only happen through music."

-Amro Hosny Helmy, Oud Master, Salaam-Shalom
